Memorial: A Novel

In Houston, a Black daycare worker is left alone with the Japanese mother of his boyfriend for weeks after the boyfriend abruptly leaves to see his dying father in Osaka. They bond over loneliness and cooking. This book is indescribably good—it’s so quiet and observant and true. So many cultures and belief systems collide in interesting ways. I loved it.
