Shanghai Tower Monograph

Poem to Shanghai

The design approach to this subject was a sparse, high production value, minimalist aesthetic that echoes the documentary style photography that runs throughout. My personal highlight of this book was contacting and integrating images from ‘On the Roofs’, Fadim Makhorov and Vitaly Raskalov, a pair of Russian super highrise climbers. My second highlight was the printing of this book at Artron, in Shenzhen, my first visit to China and one of my more marathon like press projects.

Shanghai Tower (the book) tells the compelling story of the making of China’s tallest building. The visually driven book captures the emotion and spirit of a super-high rise that is transformative in nature. It is evocative rather than documentary in its approach, relying primarily on black-and-white photography and minimal text to convey the story of the concepts underlying the design, the journey of construction, key components of the tower, and its impact on a world city.
